Acquiring elite hotel status is one of the best ways to make your trip more rewarding and enjoyable. There can be a big difference between staying elite and non-elite, from upgrades and bonus points to free breakfast. But how do you quantify the value the situation brings?
In this guide, we'll try to do just that with one of the largest and most popular hotel rewards programs in the world: Marriott Bonvoy.
As the combination of the three previous programs (Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards) fade into the background at Marriott Bonvoy, we continue to see changes to the program.Fully dynamic award pricingwas one of the main causes of concern.
A lot has changed, so this analysis will delve into the combine program and try to answer a simple question: is it worth pursuing (or keeping) Marriott Bonvoy Elite in 2023?
Methodology
Before I go any further, I'll start with a simple caveat: the calculations below are only one way to estimate the value of Marriott Bonvoy elite.
Maybe you don't eat much breakfast and therefore don't care about the benefits. Or maybe you're on a business trip and don't like being able to upgrade to a bigger room at check-in. You can adjust the numbers based on your personal travel patterns and the value you'll get from each applicable benefit.
Also, all of these numbers are based on the value of benefits you will receive once you reach a certain status and continue to qualify each year thereafter. If you're starting from scratch, you won't reap the benefits from day one. At the end of the post, I've included a breakdown of people who hold this position.
Finally, it is important to highlight the key assumptions we make to arrive at the final prices for each level of Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status:
Subscribe to our daily newsletter
- Complete 20% more nights than the minimum required for the level.
- Spend an average of $150 per night on eligible expenses.
- Your average stay is two nights.
I will also use the following case that characterizes Marriott:
- Your stays are split evenly between full-service properties (like Westin and Renaissance) and limited-service properties (like Fairfield Inn or SpringHill Suites).
As always, be sure to adjust these numbers based on your personal travel patterns.
Two final reminders: For the purposes of this analysis, I base the value of all bonus points earned onLatest TPG ratings, which Marriott lists at 0.84 cents each. I also round all estimates to the nearest $5 to simplify the numbers.

Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite (35 USD)
The lowest tier in the Marriott Bonvoy program is Silver Elite status, which is usually achieved after 10 nights. This is also included as an automatic benefit with the 15 Elite night credits you can earn annually on some currently available co-branded credit cards:Karta kredytowa Marriott Bonvoy UnlimitedIMarriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Cardfrom Chase.
For the purposes of this analysis, I'll assume you have six 12-night stays split evenly between full- and limited-service Marriott properties.

Extra points | Earn 10% more points than regular members. That's an extra 1 point per dollar spent at most properties (though only 0.5 extra points at Element, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites locations). At 12 nights and an average rate of $150 per night, that equates to 1,800 points. | $15. |
Late departure | Members may request a late check out by calling the front desk on the day of departure and informing the agent of their expected departure time. This benefit is subject to availability and has no set time. | 20 dollars. |

Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite (805 USD)
Gold Elite status is the second level in the Marriott Bonvoy program and is typically earned after 25 nights. There are many credit cards that either include or allow this status:
- Platinum Card® IZ American Expressaprovides automatic Gold Elite status.
- Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card (no longer open to new applicants) activates automatic Gold Elite status.
- TheKarta kredytowa Marriott Bonvoy Unlimitedallows you to earn Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 in purchases each billing year.
- TheKarta Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express®provides automatic Gold Elite status.
- TheKarta Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express®allows you to earn Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 in purchases each billing year.
The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card details are developed independently by The Points Guy. The card information on this page has not been verified or provided by the card issuer.
Most Bonvoy cards also reward you15 Elite Night Points per year, enabling cardholders to attain Gold status with just 10 additional nights of Elite status. You are limited to 15 credits per Marriott Bonvoy account from personal cards. You can only collect Elite Night Credits without a business or personal card, which increases the maximum to 40 Elite Night Credits per year. Remember that tooKarta Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express®includes 25 elite nights per year.
I'm assuming you have 15 30-night stays evenly split between Marriott Full Service and Limited Service properties.
Benefit details | value | |
---|---|---|
Extra points | Earn 25% more points than regular members, which equates to 2.5 extra points per dollar spent at most hotels. Since I'm assuming 30 nights at an average rate of $150 per night, that's an additional 11,250 points worth $95. | $95. |
Priority for late check out | Gold members have priority for late check out until 14:00, subject to availability. | $50. |
Improved Internet | Gold members enjoy faster speeds with free extended internet access. | $15. |
Room upgrade | Gold members can upgrade their available space to upgraded rooms at check-in. This may include upper floor rooms, rooms with special amenities or executive floor rooms, but not suites. I will use the same estimate of $20 per night as in other elite hotel guides. It's worth noting that this applies to almost all Marriott brands, with the exception of Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Aloft, Element and Vistana. | $600. |
Welcome gift | Receive the welcome gift of Bonus Marriott Points at check-in - either 250 points for limited-service properties or 500 points for full-service locations. Based on the above assumption, you would earn an average of 375 points (worth about $3) for each of your 15 stays. | $45 |
Together | $805. |

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite (2495 USD)
The third level in the Marriott Bonvoy program is Platinum Elite, which typically requires 50 nights. This is comparable to Gold status from the older Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs.
Like Gold Elite, you can earn this credit card status in a number of ways:
- TheKarta Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express®ensures automatic Platinum Elite status.
- Spending $75,000 per membership year on the now-discontinued Ritz-Carlton Rewards card.
For the purposes of this analysis, I'll assume you have 30 60-night stays split evenly between Marriott Full Service and Limited Service properties.
Benefit details | value | |
---|---|---|
Extra points | Platinum Elite members earn 50% more points on paid stays than regular members. This gives you 5 extra points for every dollar you spend. Since we're assuming 60 nights at an average rate of $150 per night, you'll receive an additional 45,000 points worth $380. | $380. |
Priority for late check out | Platinum members have a 16-hour warranty. late check out with few exceptions. Subject to availability at resorts, convention and design hotels and not available at all for stays at Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club and participating Vistana properties. | $125. |
Expert phone support | Platinum Elite members have access to a dedicated phone line that can come in handy when you need help with your booking. | 20 dollars. |
Improved Internet | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $60. |
Upgrade to upgraded rooms, including suites | Platinum Elite members enjoy upgrades to superior rooms upon check-in, including suites (though not at Ritz-Carlton properties). However, this excludes Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, participating Vistana properties, Aloft hotels and Element hotels. We will increase the estimate slightly to $35 per night for full service stays and use the much lower $5 per night for limited service properties. | $1200. |
Access to living room | You are guaranteed Club Lounge access at the following properties: JW Marriott, Marriott, Delta Hotels (not resorts), Autograph Collection, Renaissance, Sheraton, Le Meridien and Westin. For older Marriott brands, if the lounge is closed or there is no lounge at the property, you are entitled to breakfast at the hotel restaurant or at 750 outlets. At the time of writing, these brands make up about 25% of the programming portfolio, so I'm assuming $10 a night for 15 of the 60 nights. | $150. |
Welcome gift | Things get a little complicated with the way the program handles welcome gifts for Platinum Elite passengers. At first glance, it sounds simple enough ("points, breakfast offer or benefits"), but it quickly gets complicated when you consider the 32 brands. Breakfast is included for everyone on some brands, given as a welcome gift for Platinum members with others, and available in the lounge as a separate Platinum benefit with others. For a full breakdown of these benefits, check out this handy guideMarriott Breakfast Benefitsand remember that some benefits vary by brand. However, I will price this gift at $10 per night at full-service locations, and since brands like Fairfield and SpringHill Suites offer 500 points per stay, $4 per stay at limited-service properties. | $360. |
Annual election privilege | Platinum Elite members are entitled to an annual voting benefit once qualified. You can choose from:
We recommend the Suite Night Awards as you will be able to confirm a basic suite up to five days before check-in - although this depends on each property and is not guaranteed. I'll put them at $40 each. | $200. |
Together | 2495 $. |

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite (4685 USD)
The next level in the Marriott Rewards program is Titanium Elite status. This level is usually achieved after 75 nights (and therefore comparable to the old Marriott Platinum). For the purposes of this analysis, I'm assuming you have 90 nights, split evenly between Marriott Full Service and Limited Service.
Benefit details | value | |
---|---|---|
Extra points | Titanium members receive a 75% bonus on paid stays, which equates to an additional 7.5 points per dollar spent at most hotels in the Marriott portfolio. Based on my assumption of 90 nights at an average rate of $150 per night, this adds up to an additional 101,250 points worth $850. | $850. |
Priority for late check out | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $175. |
Expert phone support | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $30. |
Improved Internet | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $90. |
Upgrade to upgraded rooms, including suites | The room upgrade benefit for Titanium members is almost the same as regular Platinum members, except that suites are included at Ritz-Carlton properties. I will go with the same estimate ($35/night for full service properties and $5/night for limited service hotels) with an additional $200 for the additional suite option at Ritz-Carlton hotels. | 2075 $. |
Access to living room | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $225. |
Welcome gift | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $540. |
Annual election privilege | Once you earn 50 Marriott Bonvoy Elite Qualifying Nights, you can choose one of the Choice Benefits listed above, but reaching 75 Qualifying Nights unlocks another Choice Benefit. You may have the same options as above, with two exceptions. You can gift Gold Elite status to a friend/family member instead of Silver status. You also have the additional opportunity to be rewarded with one free night (applies to properties costing up to 40,000 points). We will stick to our estimate of $50 per night, with an estimate of $500 if we factor in the annual benefit of the option earned over 50 nights. | $500. |
Status elit United Premier Silver | United and Marriott joined forces to createRewardsPlus partnershipwhich gives Titanium Elite members automatic United Premier Silver status. Mivaluethat tier is $495, though the actual benefit depends on how often you fly United. We assume conservative use and assign a price of $200. | $200. |
Together | 4.685 $. |

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite (6445 USD)
The highest level in the Marriott program is Bonvoy Ambassador Elite. To qualify at this level, you must reach 100 Elite Qualifying Nights and $23,000 in eligible spending. For the purposes of this analysis, I'll assume you have 120 nights, again evenly split between full and limited service properties, but to reach the $23,000 threshold, I'll increase your nightly rate to $195.
Benefit details | value | |
---|---|---|
Extra points | Same benefit, but with 120 nights and an average rate of $195 per night, you'll earn an additional 175,500 points, worth about $1,475. | $1475. |
Priority for late check out | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $225. |
Expert phone support | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $40. |
Improved Internet | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $120. |
Upgrade to upgraded rooms, including suites | Same benefit, more frequent use. | 2.600 $. |
Access to living room | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $300. |
Welcome gift | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $720. |
Annual election privilege | You will not receive additional benefits from your selection if you stay more than 100 nights, so we will keep the price the same. | $500. |
Status elit United Premier Silver | Same benefit, more frequent use. | $265. |
Ambassador service | In the past, Marriott has assigned all Ambassador Elite members a dedicated ambassador to handle reservations and other requests. Unfortunately when it was discontinuedMarriott fired its ambassadorsin response to the coronavirus pandemic. They announced itDedicated ambassadors will return in 2023which could increase the value of this benefit again. For now, we'll take a conservative approach and estimate this benefit at $100. | $100. |
your 24 | The second (and final) benefit unique to Ambassador Elites is the Your24 benefit, which allows you to choose your check-in and check-out times. However, its versatility is subject to availability, with many reports suggesting it's hit or miss, so we'll price it at $100. | $100. |
Together | 6445 $. |

What if I start from scratch?
Of course, as I mentioned earlier, all of the numbers above represent prices for those of you who have already earned these status levels. However, you can start from scratch with no status in the new Marriott program. In this case, you will not receive any benefits until you spend 10 nights and attain Silver Elite status. After that, you won't get any additional benefits until you reach 25 nights to earn Gold Elite status. How can you quantify this increase in ranking?
As with a number of elite airlines, I tried to answer this question by converting the above calculations to a nightly rate as follows:
- Marriott Bonvoy Silver: $35/12 nights = $2.92 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold: $805/30 nights = $26.83 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum: $2,495 / 60 nights = $41.58 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Titanium: $4,685 / 90 nights = $52.05 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador: $6,445 / 120 nights = $53.71 per night.
For example, let's say you plan to spend 60 nights at Marriott properties this year. If you are starting over, you will receive no benefits for the first 10 nights, then you will receive Silver benefits for the next 15 nights ($2.92 per night), then Gold benefits for the next 25 nights ($26.83 per night each) USD per night) ) and finally enjoy Platinum benefits for the last 10 nights ($41.58 per night). So if you start from scratch and figure you'll spend 60 nights at Marriott hotels in 2023, you'll get $1,130.35 in program value.

Is Marriott Elite Worth Pursuing?
Given these prices, is it worth pursuing Elite status (or a higher level of Elite status) with the Marriott program?
As with every analysis we do at TPG, there's no simple answer to this as it depends entirely on your individual situation. However, here are some key questions to help you decide:
- How much will you travel in the future? When aiming for elite, it's important to think about how much you'll be traveling in the future. For example, if you work hard to earn Platinum, the valuable benefits listed above only apply if you actually travel.
- What is the incremental value of one level over the other? Many of you may get to the next level, so consider whether the benefits are worth the effort. There is no point in going all out for benefits that are not important to you.
- How well does Marriott's geographic coverage fit into your typical travels? There's really no point in targeting the elite at a hotel chain if you can't regularly stay at one (or more) of their properties. Explore various Marriott hotels near your regular destinations.
- How sensitive are you to price and convenience? There are many trade-offs in this hobby, and one of the most common is deciding whether to use your preferred airline or hotel chain when it's not the most convenient or cheapest. Would you stay at a Marriott hotel if there was another cheaper and/or more convenient brand where you needed to be? If the answer is no, earning Marriott Elite status (or any hotel chain's elite status, for that matter) may not be worth it.
- Is a credit card a better option? As mentioned above, many credit cards have elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program. As a result, it might be best to just open one and reap the benefits without having to worry about qualifying (or re-qualifying) the hard way.
The answers to these questions are not easy, as many different factors are at play. However, it's worth evaluating your own situation when deciding whether Marriott Elite status is right for you.
